Roof Rats & Norway Rats in Santa Rosa

Roof Rats

Roof rats (also called black rats or ship rats) are the dominant species in Sonoma County. They’re agile climbers, ranging from light brown to near-black, and they prefer nesting in elevated spaces: attics, wall voids, and the areas above drop ceilings. They enter through attic vents, roof gaps, and utility penetrations, often using overhanging tree branches as their route in. Norway Rats

Norway rats are larger and stockier than roof rats. They tend to burrow outdoors near foundations, under debris piles, and along creek corridors rather than nesting inside structures. Properties near drainage channels and open land face the greatest Norway rat exposure.

The Risks Both Species Pose

Both species gnaw on electrical wiring, structural wood, HVAC ductwork, and insulation. Chewed wiring is a documented fire risk. Damaged insulation raises energy costs and can require full replacement. Rats can squeeze through openings as small as a half inch, so even minor gaps around the roofline or utility penetrations are enough. Active infestations can also introduce secondary pests, including fleas and mites, into the structure.

Signs of a Rat Infestation

Rats are nocturnal and stay hidden during the day. By the time most property owners notice a problem, the infestation is already established. These are the indicators that warrant a professional inspection:
